Can International Students Complete Internships at Local Companies?

ANSWER: Yes.

International students may complete internships at local companies if the internship is part of their educational programme as practical training and does not involve performing an independent paid job function. In such cases, the internship is arranged by the university and the host organization as part of the student’s practical training.

If an intern performs work for remuneration under an employment contract or a civil-law contract, the migration rules governing employment apply. A student enrolled full-time in an accredited vocational secondary education or higher education programme may qualify for the student exemption from the requirement to obtain a work permit or patent. In other cases, a patent, work permit, or another lawful basis for employment is required.

The employer must notify the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the conclusion and termination of the relevant contract.
