Documents Required to Enter into an Employment Contract

As a rule, the following documents are required: a passport, an employment record book or information on employment history, an individual insurance account number (SNILS), and an education certificate or diploma, if it is required for the position, as well as a work patent or a document confirming an exemption from the patent requirement.

A foreign national who is temporarily staying in Russia must additionally confirm the lawfulness of their stay by providing a migration card, visa, and migration registration documents, where applicable.

If the foreign national does not have a SNILS, the employer arranges their registration in the individual accounting system.

An individual taxpayer identification number (INN) certificate is not included in the universal list of mandatory documents required when entering into an employment contract, although a taxpayer identification number may be obtained.

Foreign nationals are not subject to military registration in the Russian Federation, so a military registration document is generally not required.

A voluntary medical insurance (VMI/DMS) policy is not a universal document required for every employment contract. However, the obligation to have insurance or provide medical documents may arise from the foreign national’s migration status, work patent, or specific legal requirements.
