Lions of Belgorod State University: a team that grows with generations of students
The history of the FC Lions of Belgorod State University began in 2016, when students from Arab countries took the initiative to create a football team. This year, the team celebrates its 10th anniversary!
Since then, the team’s lineup has changed many times. With each new group of students, players from different countries joined the team, including countries in Africa, Latin America, and other regions. Some played for several seasons, while others finished their time with the team after graduating from university. Yet they all look back on the Lions with pride and fond memories!
That is why the Lions do not have one permanent lineup — they have a story that continues from one generation to the next.
And it has been quite a journey!
Over the years, the team has taken part in city and university competitions, winning and placing in a number of tournaments.
Its achievements include winning the second division of the Belgorod Spring 8-a-side Football Championship, taking first place in the football tournament at the 2022 “Strength in Unity” Festival of National Diasporas, winning silver at the 2020 JOMA RUS Belgorod Futsal Cup, taking first place in the Belgorod Amateur 8-a-side Football League, as well as winning prizes at the Belgorod State University Spartakiad among international student associations and the University Friendship Cup.
There have also been individual achievements: Lions players have been selected for all-star teams at city tournaments and have received individual awards.
For example, in one of the autumn 8-a-side football championships in Belgorod, the Lions finished second in the second division. Competing against 12 teams, they won seven of their 11 matches and finished just three points behind the winners. One of the Lions players was also named the tournament’s Best Forward.
In 2026, the team delivered another strong performance in the city championship, winning bronze medals in the third division of the Belgorod Summer 8-a-side Futsal Championship after seven wins in 14 matches.
But behind all these numbers is what makes the story truly special: for many international students, football became another part of university life, alongside their studies, student associations, cultural activities, and community events.
The players did more than just take to the field. They took part in university activities, supported various initiatives, worked with young football players, and joined charity events.
And, of course, the team was also a place where students from different countries could simply spend time together: training, travelling to competitions, and celebrating their achievements on the field.
Over time, graduates moved to different countries. Many continued their professional careers after leaving Belgorod State University. Some stayed connected to sport, while others chose different career paths. Meanwhile, new faces joined the team.
Perhaps that is why the story of the Lions cannot be described as the story of a single lineup. It is the story of several generations of students who, over the years, wore the same kit and stepped onto the same field with a common goal!
And so, the team has more than just a list of awards. It also has something that can never be captured in a tournament table — memories of student life, friends, matches, and the time they shared together.
Today, we congratulate the FC Lions of Belgorod State University on their 10th anniversary and wish them new victories, exciting matches, and new generations of players who will carry this story forward!
